SURMA SAROWAR TREK

Surma Sarowar Lake, located in the Bajhang district of western Nepal, is a sacred site for Hindus, often referred to as Mini Kailash. At an elevation of 4,333 meters above sea level, it provides both a spiritual journey and an adventurous experience in nature. Trekking to Surma Sarowar Lake is not just about reaching the lake; it’s also about soaking in the mystical ambiance of the Himalayas. The ascent to the high pass at 4,859 meters rewards trekkers with stunning views of the sacred lake, impressive peaks like Jethi Bahurani, expansive grasslands, and a rich variety of plants and animals. However, hikers should be cautious as the high altitude can lead to altitude sickness.

In the center of Surma Sarowar is the stone temple dedicated to Surma Devi, believed to be one of the 16 sisters of Nava Durga Bhagwati. According to legends, the goddess selected this unspoiled location for her home due to its purity, peace, and distance from human habitation. The yearly Janai Purnima festival draws pilgrims from various places to honor Goddess Surma Devi and partake in a sacred bath in the lake's holy waters. After the ceremony, many pilgrims head down to Niksari Patan, where several streams merge to create a river with plenty of camping opportunities.

Beyond its spiritual importance, Surma Sarowar is a biodiversity hotspot, featuring colorful wildflowers, medicinal plants, and sightings of wildlife such as the rare black bear, barking deer, and Himalayan pheasants. The trek provides a special chance to engage with the rich culture and traditions of local communities, savor traditional dishes, and participate in cultural festivals like Deuda, Fag, and Magal, where hymns honoring Goddess Surma Devi echo through the valleys.

    Kathmandu – Dhangadi

    The journey begins in Kathmandu, the bustling capital of Nepal, known for its rich history and vibrant culture. From there, the road winds towards Dhangadi, a thriving urban area in the western part of the country that serves as a gateway to the remote areas beyond.

    Dhangadi – Bhadya (Bajhang)

    Bhadya – Mumla (Jayaprithavinagar)

    Depart Bhadya, next destination is Mumla, also known as Jayaprithavinagar. This city presents a blend of traditional lifestyle and modern influences, allowing travelers to experience the unique attributes of this emerging urban center.

    Jayaprithavinagar – Thakule Danda

    Thakule Danda – Dau Tal

    We will then drive from Thakule Danda to Dau Tal. The area is known for its picturesque surroundings, where the calm waters of the lake are surrounded by lush greenery, providing a peaceful environment ideal for relaxation.

    Dau Tal- Dhanteli

    The route goes from Dau Tal to Dhanteli. As the journey unfolds, the rural charm of Dhanteli is revealed, showing the simplicity of rural life and the hospitality of its people.

    Dhanteli-Jaljala

    Travels continue from Dhanteli to Jaljala. This part of the journey is marked by the appeal of the natural environment, where the peaceful atmosphere of the area invites exploration and reflection.

    Afre Gufa – Raja Ko Pal Halne

    Raja Jo Pal Halne - Swil
