To make the most of your trek and stay safe, adhere to acclimatization guidelines. Makalu Adventure follows a method developed by Drs Jim Duff and Peter Gormly, who are specialists in wilderness medicine. Altitude sickness can begin above 2000m and is common over 2500m.
A good guideline is to avoid climbing more than 400m in elevation each day for your sleeping locations. Take a break every three days or rest after ascending 1000m.
When acclimatizing to altitude, do not push yourself too hard. Avoid becoming overly breathless. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Refrain from consuming alcohol. Limit your intake of caffeine, salt, and protein. Aim for about 70% carbohydrates when above 3500m.
