SURMA SAROWAR TREK

Located in the Bajhang district of western Nepal, Surma Sarovar Lake is a sacred lake for Hindus known as Mini Kailash. Standing at an altitude of 4,333 meters above sea level, it offers both a spiritual pilgrimage and an exciting adventure in the lap of nature. A trek to Surma Sarovar Lake is not only about reaching the destination but also about immersing yourself in the mystical atmosphere of the Himalayas. The climb to the high pass at 4,859 meters is rewarded with panoramic views of the sacred lake, towering mountain peaks like Jethi Bahurani, vast grasslands and an abundance of flora and fauna. However, hikers must tread carefully as the high altitude poses a risk of altitude sickness.
At the heart of Surma Sarovar lies the stone temple of Surma Devi, who is believed to be one of the 16 sisters of Nava Durga Bhagwati. Legends say that the goddess chose this pristine retreat as her abode for its purity, tranquility and remoteness from human settlements. The annual Janai Purnima festival attracts pilgrims from far and wide to pay homage to Goddess Surma Devi and enjoy a sacred bath in the holy waters of the lake. After the ritual, pilgrims often descend to Niksari Patan, where numerous streams converge to form a river that offers ample camping spots.
Apart from its spiritual significance, Surma Sarovar is a haven for biodiversity and boasts vibrant wild flowers, medicinal herbs and glimpses of wildlife like the elusive black bear, barking deer and Himalayan pheasants. The trek offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich culture and traditions of the local communities, delicious traditional cuisine and cultural festivals like Deuda, Fag and Magal where hymns in honor of Goddess Surma Devi reverberate through the valleys.
