BHUTAN HISTORICAL TOUR

ARRIVE PARO
Experience stunning views of Mount Everest and other Himalayan mountains, including the sacred Jhomolhari. Arrive at Paro International Airport, meet Bhutanese friend, enjoy lunch, discuss tour program and stay overnight.
2PARO β A DAY EXCURSION TO TAKTSANG MONASTERY
On a special day we will visit Taktsang Monastery, built around Guru Rimpoche's meditation cave in 1684. The monastery is located on a 900 meter steep cliff and legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava arrived here on the back of a flying tiger, Dorji Drolo. . We will also visit Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower now housed in the National Museum, and Paro Rimpung Dzong, the center of civil and religious authority in the valley. The day ends with a drive to Thimphu.
3THIMPHU β SIGHTSEEING
The day includes a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, Dupthop Lhakhang, National Library, School of Painting, Institute of Traditional Medicine, Lungtenzampa, Tashichho Dzong, Simtokha Dzong, Handicraft Trade Centre, Thimphu and Hotel in Thimphu. Highlights include visiting the National Library, Painting School, Institute of Traditional Medicine, Lungtenzampa, Tashichho Dzong, Simtokha Dzong and shopping in Thimphu.
4THIMPHU - PUNAKHA
After breakfast drive to Punakha via Dochula Pass where you can see the High Himalayas. Visit the Chime Lhakhang, built by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, known as the "Temple of Fertility". Lunch in Punakha, visit Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The Dzong was predicted by Guru Rimpoche and was named Druk Pungthang Dechen Phodrang (Palace of Great Happiness). Punakha is the winter residence of Je-Khenpa and the site of a new national assembly convened in 1952 by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk.
5PUNAKHA β GANGTEY - TRONGSA
This itinerary includes breakfast to Trongsa where we will visit Wangdiphodrang Dzong, built in 1638, and Gangtey Gompa, Nyingmapa Monastery. We will also explore Phobjikha valley, famous for black-necked cranes. After lunch, we will drive to Trongsa, where we will visit Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral home of the royal family and the first two hereditary kings of Bhutan. We will also visit Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower with a chapel dedicated to Trongsa Penlop Jigme Namgyal.
6BUMTHANG β SIGHTSEEING
After breakfast, departure to Bumtang for lunch. Visit Jakar Dzong, the largest Dzong in Bhutan, and Lamey Goemba. Visit Jambay Lhakhang, built by King Srongsen Gampo in 659, visited by Guru Rimpoche. The temple renovated by Sindhu Raja has a lake where the Terma is hidden. Overnight at the hotel.
7TRONGSA β BUMTHANG β SIGHTSEEING
The itinerary includes a visit to Chakhar Lhakhang, Kurjey Lhakhang and Tamshing Lhakhang, all built by disciples of Guru Rimpoche. After breakfast we will visit Membartsho, the lake where Pema Lingpa discovered the hidden relics of Terma. Later we will visit the Mathra factory and cheese factory before checking into a hotel in Bumthang.
8BUMTHANG - THIMPHU
Early breakfast, then transfer to Thimphu. Overnight Hotel in Thimphu.
9THIMPHU β PARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT for departure
An early morning drive to Paro International Airport and your Bhutanese friends from Makalu Adventure will see you off on your way back home.
