AMA DABLAM EXPEDITION
Often dubbed the Matterhorn of the Himalayas, Mount Ama Dablam is globally recognized as one of the iconic mountains. It's akin to an alpine fantasy for many novice climbers who hope to add this magnificent peak to their climbing resumes. Situated just a few kilometers away from the legendary Mount Everest, Ama Dablam raises in height and stands tall in the heart of the Imja Valley. According to Wikipedia the main peak is around 6,812 meters and lower western peak is 6,170 meters.
The Ama Dablam expedition begins with a thrilling flight to Lukla Airport. From here, the trail stretches northwards alongside the milky-colored Dudh Koshi River to Namche Bazaar, at 3,440m. Of enormous importance is Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital and all-important acclimatization halt.
You will spend at least two nights in Namche to acclimatise to the altitude. Trekking over the next two days to Pangboche at 3,930m, it is possible to stay overnight before recrossing the Dudh Koshi and beginning the ascent to Ama Dablam Base Camp. Set in a meadow crossed by a flowing stream, Base Camp lies a little under 5,000m.
At Base Camp, accommodation consists of large self-contained tents with comfortable dining and relaxation tents, showers, and toilets.
At Base Camp, the guides with experience in mountain climbing will help you establish a routine for the expedition: skills' reviews, equipment check, acclimatization rotations on the mountain. When the weather window opens and you are fully prepared, you will be on your way up to the summit, normally in three to four days. From there, the standard itinerary is three camps, but depending on group and conditions, it's feasible to go for the summit from Camp 2. The summit day is designed to be epic, topping out just in time to catch the first rays of the sun rise. Once you are standing on the summit and have taken in your monumental feat, you take a careful descent to the lower camp, sleep, and then continue to head down the following day to base camp. You'll also have a chance to refresh yourself with a shower and some relaxation before you head out for your walk to Lukla. From here, you will fly back to Kathmandu and celebrate your success with a well-deserved cold beer!
