Services
Cost Includes
-
A comprehensive K2 adventure trekking package typically includes a range of services and amenities to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. However, there are also exclusions that trekkers need to be aware of when budgeting and preparing for their adventure.
Here's a breakdown of what is generally included and excluded in the cost of a K2 adventure trek:
Typical Inclusions:
- Permits and Fees: This usually covers the K2 trekking permit, national park entrance fees, and any required environmental or garbage disposal fees.
- Accommodation: During the trek, accommodation is typically provided in two-person tents. Some packages might include hotel stays in Islamabad and Skardu at the beginning and end of the trek.
- Meals: Most packages include three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) while on the trek, and sometimes full board at base camp for members and staff. Some may also include snacks and refreshments like tea and coffee at the campsites. Farewell dinners in Islamabad might also be included.
- Staff: This covers the salaries, equipment, food, and insurance for the trekking guide(s), cook(s), and porters. The number of porters included usually allows for a certain weight limit of personal baggage per trekker (e.g., 60-75 kg to base camp, less on return). Some expeditions also include a Liaison Officer appointed by the government.
- Camping Equipment: Group camping gear such as mess tents, kitchen tents, toilet tents, storage tents, tables, chairs, and cooking equipment are generally provided. Individual tents and sleeping mattresses are also usually included. Some operators provide solar panels or generators for charging electronic devices at base camp.
- Transportation: This typically includes airport transfers in Islamabad and transportation from Skardu to the trek starting point (Askole) and back. Internal flights between Islamabad and Skardu might be included in some packages.
- Cargo Clearance: Some packages might include international air cargo clearance of personal luggage and payment of government taxes.
- Communication: Satellite phones for emergency use might be carried by the guides, and sometimes are available for personal use at an extra cost. Local SIM cards for mobile communication might be facilitated.
- Other: Some operators offer pre-trip briefings, gear checks, and even training weekends. Medical supplies and basic first aid are usually part of the group equipment.
Cost Excludes
-
- Visa Fees: The cost of obtaining a Pakistani visa is typically not included and needs to be arranged and paid for by the trekker.
- International and Internal Flights (unless specified): While some packages from international operators might include international flights, many land-only packages will exclude these. Similarly, the Skardu-Islamabad flight might be an extra cost.
- Personal Equipment: Personal trekking gear and clothing, including high-altitude boots, sleeping bags suitable for extreme cold, and personal medical kits, are usually the responsibility of the trekker.
- Personal Expenses: This includes items such as personal snacks, drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), laundry services, telephone calls, and souvenirs.
- Tips and Gratuities: Tipping for the local trekking staff (guides, porters, cooks) is customary and is usually not included in the upfront cost. Some operators might suggest a recommended amount.
- Rescue and Evacuation Costs: Emergency rescue and evacuation costs, including helicopter services if needed, are typically not included and it is mandatory to have adequate travel and medical insurance that covers these eventualities. Some operators might require a security deposit for helicopter rescue services.
- Insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and trip cancellation is almost always excluded and is the trekker's responsibility.
- Food and Accommodation Beyond the Itinerary: Any costs incurred due to delays (e.g., weather, flight cancellations) that require extra hotel nights or meals outside the planned itinerary are usually not covered.
- Single Supplement: If a trekker requires a single room in hotels or a private tent when twin-sharing is the standard, an additional single supplement fee might apply.
- Additional Porter Services: If a trekker requires more luggage to be carried than the included allowance, extra porter services can usually be arranged at an additional cost.
- Oxygen (for high-altitude expeditions): For those attempting to summit K2 or other high peaks in the area, supplementary oxygen is a significant additional cost.
