SAMTENGANG WINTER TREK

The Samtengang Winter Trek in Bhutan offers an enchanting journey through the Himalayan kingdom, showcasing breathtaking landscapes and an intimate encounter with the country's rich culture and traditions. This season offers a unique view of Bhutan's beauty as it shows the stark contrast between the vibrant green valleys and the pristine white snow. Winter is also the time when local communities take part in traditional festivities, providing tourists with an authentic glimpse of Bhutanese culture.

Preparing for a trek requires careful preparation, including layering clothing, investing in high-quality trekking shoes, staying hydrated and nourished, and understanding altitude acclimatization. The trek covers approximately 15 kilometers over three days and weaves through lush forests of frost-decorated pines and rhododendrons. Every step reveals stunning views, from vast valleys covered in snow to towering peaks that seem to touch the heavens. Winter brings unique wildlife behavior with elusive creatures such as red pandas and Himalayan tahrs peacefully grazing against a snowy backdrop. Bird watchers will delight in spotting migratory species on these winter trails.

    Arrive Paro by Druk Air

    Druk air BAe 146-100 series, the only national carrier, will fly to Para. The flight offers a beautiful view of the mountains and the countryside. Upon arrival and visa formalities have been completed, you will be received by our members. Afternoon/evening free. Overnight at Kichu Resort.

    Paro

    Full day tour of Paro valley. After breakfast depart for Drukgyel Dzong, although now in ruins this Dzong has historical significance. Also from there Mount. Chomolhari - "Mountain of the Goddess" can be seen on a clear day. On the way back, visit one of the most sacred Lhakhang in Bhutan, Kyich, built in the 7th century AD. It dates back to the time of the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampa. After lunch, visit the Ta Dzong, once a fortified watchtower that now serves as the country's national museum. Also visit Rinpung Dzong, which means "heap of gems fort", it is the center of district administration and monastic authority. Overnight at a hotel in Paro.

    Paro - Thimphu

    After breakfast, transfer to Thimphu, today's capital of Bhutan. Just outside Thimphu stands Simtokha Dzong. Built in 1627, it is the first dzong built by Shabdrung Ngawang and now houses a school for dzongkha studies. In the afternoon, visit Tashichhodzong, the "Fortress of the Glorious Religion", built in 1641 by the first Shabdrung and reconstructed in 1961 under the late King Jigme Dorji Wanhchuck. Visit the Memorial Chorten, a beautiful stupa built in 1974 to commemorate the third King of Bhutan, widely regarded as the father of modern Bhutan. In the evening, a visit to the Handicraft Shop, where you can see a wide range of beautifully hand-woven and drawn products. Overnight at a hotel in Thimphu.

    Thimphu - Khuruthang

    Transfer to Khuruthang with packed lunch. En route, stop at the Dochula Pass (altitude 3100) for a mesmerizing view of the snow-capped peaks of the Eastern Himalayas. Lunch at the camp is followed by a visit to the sacred Punakha Dzong, a fine example of Bhutanese architecture. Earthquake fires and floods have taken their devastating toll on this Dzong, which has been completely restored under the current king. In the Machin Lhakhang chapel, the reiamns of the Shabdrungs are cast here. The road from Thimphu to Punakha is a wonderful canvas of color, an abundance of brightly colored flowers among the soft greens of wild herbs and forest trees. Overnight camp at Khuruthang.

    Khuruthang - Limukha [14 Km, 5/6 Hours]

    The trek begins with a gradual ascent through the chiro forest. On the way visit to Dompala village. Night camp.

    Limukha - Chungsakha [14 Km, 5/6 Hours]

    The trail takes you through rhododendron and oak forests. On the way you will pass the famous Drukpa Kuenly Lhakhang.

    Chungsakha - Samtengang [13 Km, 5 Hours]

    The treks will take you to Samtengang village under Wangdi district. Camp at Samtengang by the lake.

    Samtengang - Wangdiphodrang - Thimphu

    The trail now descends to the motor road where you will be picked up by the Connecting Horizons Adventures Tram and transferred to Wangdi. After lunch visit Wangdi Dzong and local market and then transfer to Thimphu. Overnight at a hotel in Thimphu.

    Thimphu - Paro

    Thimphu city tour in the morning. Visit the National Library, which houses an extensive collection of ancient Buddhist texts and manuscripts. Then a visit to a painting school famous for Bhutanese Thangkha paintings. The Institute of Traditional Medicine, where centuries-old healing arts are still practiced today, is also worth a visit. After lunch, drive to Paro, en route visit a village house to get an idea of ​​the lifestyle of the local people. Overnight at a hotel in Paro.
