Adequate rest is crucial for maintaining energy levels during sightseeing excursions.
3Fly Kathmandu to Lukla and trek to Poyan O/N (overnight) Camp (2800m)
We are scheduled to embark on an extraordinary journey through the Himalayas, where we will be transported to the airport for an unforgettable flight. If the weather permits, we will have the opportunity to witness the majestic sight of Everest and the surrounding area during our flight. Our mode of transportation, the Twin Otter aircraft, will safely transport us to the charming hillside village of Lukla, marking the beginning of our Mera trek. Upon arrival, we will be warmly greeted by our dedicated camp staff and porters, and without delay, we will commence our expedition by heading towards our initial campsite at Puyan (2,800m).
4Trek Poyan to Pangkonngma O/N (overnight) Camp (2846m)
After we pass the Poyan Khola, we diverge from the primary trade path originating from the south and merge onto a more ancient route that ascends sharply to the ridge-line with a view of the Khare Khola. Moving down the opposite side of the ridge, we then follow along the hillside before ascending gradually to the charming farming and trading village of Pangkongma (2,846m). Numerous expedition participants have been graciously received by the villagers here, enjoying many pleasant hours by a crackling fire in the cozy and inviting ambiance of the traditional Sherpa homes.
5Trek Pangkonngma to Nashing Dingma O/N (overnight) Camp (2600m)
Ascending through dense rhododendron forest and bamboo, we are greeted with breathtaking vistas of Takshindu monastery and Lamjura to the west. As we continue our journey, we are treated to magnificent views of Mera's south face, adorned with its twin peaks, and its neighboring peak, Naulekh. The descent that follows offers a picturesque panorama of the sprawling foothills that flank the Hinku valley. This steep descent eventually leads us to a wire rope bridge that spans the Hinku Khola. On the opposite side, a challenging climb awaits, taking us to Nashing Dingma (2,600m), where we will spend the night at the well-established campsite provided by the Makalu National Park.
6Trek Nashing Dingma to Chalem Kharka O/N (overnight) Camp (3600m)
Gradually gaining elevation as we pass through grasslands and lush foliage, the trail becomes steeper as we make our way up to Surke La. A lodge just beyond the pass provides a perfect spot to enjoy a warm cup of tea. Continuing onwards, we eventually reach a charming campsite situated at a col 1km past Chalem Kharka (3,600m), surrounded by fir trees and rhododendron bushes.
7Trek Chalem Kharka to Chunbu Khaka O/N (overnight) Camp (4200m)
As we ascend the ridge, we leave behind the rhododendron and encounter rougher terrain. After traversing high grazing land and crossing a small pass, we are rewarded with stunning vistas of Kangchenjunga and Jannu in the east. Our journey takes us further up to Panch Pokari before reaching our campsite at Chunbu Kharka (4,200m).
8Trek Chunbu Kharka to Khote O/N (overnight) Camp (4200m)
We make our way up gradually, passing through the dense jungle. Along the trail, we come across very few signs of human settlement. Today will be one of our longest days of walking, mostly downhill. We will cross several flat areas and ridges until we catch our first glimpse of Mera Peak. From there, we will descend into the remote Hinku Valley. Apart from climbers, the Hinku Valley is sparsely inhabited and remarkably untouched. We will climb a steep section of the trail until we reach the forest, where we will take a break for lunch. Eventually, we will descend into the humid bamboo forests before turning north and following the west side of the Hinku River towards Mera Peak. Our ascent will be gradual as we make our way to Thaksingdingma, where we will set up camp.
9Trek from Khote or Swra to Thangnak (4320m)
Today, we are in for a treat with stunning mountain vistas as we head north along the Hinku Valley. The path gradually ascends on the western side of the Hinku River. Magnificent peaks like Kusum Kangari to the west and Mera Peak to the east will be visible in the morning. As we climb above the tree line onto the meadows on the western side of the valley, we will pause for lunch. In the afternoon, we will cross meadows and hillsides, where yaks graze, until we arrive at Tangnak (4,350m, 14,268ft). If it has been a snowy season, the rumble of avalanches will become a familiar sound. We are nearing the core of the towering Himalayas.
10Trek from Thangnak to Khare (4850m)
We're embarking on a thrilling hike to Khare, a stunning altitude of 5,100 meters (16,728ft). Our path will lead us eastward from Tangnag, tracing the Dig Glacier's lateral moraine. We'll pause to admire the Sabai Tso glacial lake, which has seen a recent rupture in its natural dam. By early afternoon, we'll reach Khare, where we'll have lunch and a breathtaking view of Mera Peak's north face. The Mera glacier cascades into the valley, adding to the breathtaking landscape.
11Rest/Acclimatization Day at Khare
Today, we are granted a day of well-deserved rest. Whether you choose to unwind and rejuvenate or explore the rugged outcrops in the vicinity, this day offers a gratifying experience and assists in acclimatization.
12Trek from Khare to Mera La (5300m)
Today, we are embarking on a journey to ascend the Mera glacier, covering a short distance. The initial climb may be steep, but it gradually levels out as we approach the peak of the glacier. Traversing a vast flat area on the glacier, we will head towards the pass known as Mera La (5,400m, 17,710ft). The panoramic views from this point are breathtaking, with crevasse fields extending in front of us and surrounded by sharp peaks and blue-green glaciers. The path to the summit of Mera Peak is clearly visible from here. After reaching Mera La, we will enjoy our lunch and spend the afternoon unwinding and keeping warm.
13Trek from Mera La to High Camp (5750m)
We will approach High camp with caution, as it involves a short but steep climb. Our main priority is to ensure a gradual ascent to acclimatize to the altitude. High camp, situated at an elevation of 5,800 m (19,025 ft), is tucked behind a prominent rock outcrop. By lunchtime, we will reach this destination and spend the afternoon unwinding and adjusting to the altitude. In his book 'Trekking Peaks of Nepal,' Bill O'Conner describes high camp as an awe-inspiring vantage point in Nepal. From here, one can witness the breathtaking panorama encompassing Kanchenjunga, Chamlang, Makalu, and Baruntse, stretching from the east. Additionally, Everest can be seen to the north, peering over the colossal unclimbed South Face of Lhotse and Nuptse. Sitting on that rock outcrop, absorbing the sounds of the wind and gazing at untouched glaciers, remains a cherished memory of my Mera expedition. We will utilize this time to make necessary preparations for our summit attempt the following day.
14Trek from High Camp to Mera Peak (6476m)
Today, we will ascend to the summit to witness the breathtaking views of Pumori (7,161 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Makalu (8,463 m), Lobuche (6,145 m), and Cho Oyu (8,201 m). Our journey will begin from high camp before sunrise. The climb to the higher northern summit is relatively simple, yet it will require 6-7 hours to complete. The payoff is an awe-inspiring panorama of some of the world's highest peaks, such as Everest and Lhotse to the north, Cho Oyu to the northwest, and Kanchenjunga and Makalu to the east. Afterward, we will descend to Mera La for lunch and continue to Khare for our overnight stay.
15Spare day at Summit/Acclimatization Day
Today, we are granted a day of well-deserved rest. Whether you choose to unwind and rejuvenate or explore the rugged outcrops in the vicinity, this day offers a gratifying experience and assists in acclimatization.
